NOTES

Experience the Best of Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe

Lake Oahe - Hughes, SD

The winter season on Lake Oahe is in full swing, and while the "hard water" has arrived, the fishing remains as legendary as ever. At Gunnin’ Dakota Guide Service, William Schied is currently tracking the transition of trophy walleye and smallmouth bass as they move into their mid-winter deep-water patterns.

The Walleye Bite: Quality Over Quantity The walleye bite on Lake Oahe has been steady, though metabolism has slowed with water temperatures hovering around 35°F. We are finding the most success targeting fish in the 15–25 foot range, particularly near the main lake points and rock piles within 30 miles of Pierre.

Top Techniques: Vertical jigging with silver or "Wonder Bread" patterns has been the ticket.

Pro Tip: Look for those low-light windows—the 7:00 AM start times are producing the most aggressive bites before the midday lull.

Smallmouth Bass & Multi-Species Action While walleye are the primary target, the smallmouth bass are still relating heavily to rocky structures. They are deeper now, requiring a slower, more deliberate presentation. We’ve also seen a healthy amount of northern pike activity in the shallower bays where the water remains slightly more active.

Ice Conditions & Safety For those looking to get out on the ice, thickness varies between 8 and 14 inches depending on the area. Recent pressure ridges have made access a bit tricky in certain spots south of the dam, so we recommend following our tracked paths for the safest transportation.

Plan Your Winter or Spring Outing As we look toward the 2026 spring season, the gizzard shad stockings are already showing a massive impact on the weight and health of the walleye population. Expect a phenomenal pre-spawn bite starting in late March!

Guide’s Note: "Fishing this time of year is all about patience and hospitality. We keep the boat or the shanty warm, the snacks ready, and the focus on a relaxing, fun environment for every skill level." — William Schied
