Real-Time Fishing Reports for Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe

Stay informed with the latest updates from the water with Gunnin Dakota Guide Service. Our fishing reports provide timely insights into the ever-changing conditions of the Missouri River system near Pierre, SD. Whether you are tracking the migration patterns of trophy walleye or looking for the most active smallmouth bass hotspots, our expert-driven reports ensure you are prepared for your next adventure. With gizzard shad populations fueling incredible growth rates this season, the bite on Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe has never been more promising.

Trophy Fish Caught

Recent outings have yielded impressive results, with a significant increase in the size and quality of trophy walleye being landed. Thanks to the abundant forage in the system, we are seeing fish with excellent weight-to-length ratios, particularly in the lower reaches of Lake Oahe. In addition to our primary targets, anglers have successfully boated aggressive Northern Pike and hefty Smallmouth Bass. While we are a freshwater operation, the diversity of the Missouri River means you never know when a hard-fighting Chinook Salmon or a prehistoric-looking Paddlefish might cross your line, making every hookset an exciting mystery.

Family-Friendly Fishing Adventures

We believe that the best days on the water are those shared with loved ones. Our family-friendly fishing trips are specifically designed to be easy-going, educational, and, most importantly, fun for all ages. We prioritize safety and comfort, providing all the necessary gear and stable transportation to ensure a stress-free experience for parents and children alike. Our guides are experts at teaching young anglers the basics of casting and reeling, ensuring that even the littlest deckhands have a high chance of success. From the first bite to the final photo, we make sure your family’s time on the Missouri River is the highlight of your vacation.

Fishing Year-Round in Pierre, SD

One of the greatest advantages of the Pierre area is the ability to enjoy fishing year-round. As the seasons shift, so do our tactics and target areas. During the spring and summer, we capitalize on the fast-paced open water bite for walleye and bass. As winter arrives, the adventure transitions to the ice, where we utilize heated shelters and advanced electronics to stay on the fish. Whether you are visiting during the heat of July or the "hard water" season in January, our services remain a reliable choice for consistent action. There is no "off-season" here—only different ways to land the catch of a lifetime.

Lake Oahe - Hughes, SD River Report on 21st Jan, 2026

The winter season on Lake Oahe is in full swing, and while the "hard water" has arrived, the fishing remains as legendary as ever. At Gunnin’ Dakota Guide Service, William Schied is currently tracking the transition of trophy walleye and smallmouth bass as they move into their mid-winter deep-water patterns. The Walleye Bite: Quality Over Quantity The walleye bite on Lake Oahe has been steady, though metabolism has slowed with water temperatures hovering around 35°F. We are finding the most success targeting fish in the 15–25 foot range, particularly near the main lake points and rock piles within 30 miles of Pierre. Top Techniques: Vertical jigging with silver or "Wonder Bread" patterns has been the ticket. Pro Tip: Look for those low-light windows—the 7:00 AM start times are producing the most aggressive bites before the midday lull. Smallmouth Bass & Multi-Species Action While walleye are the primary target, the smallmouth bass are still relating heavily to rocky structures. They are deeper now, requiring a slower, more deliberate presentation. We’ve also seen a healthy amount of northern pike activity in the shallower bays where the water remains slightly more active. Ice Conditions & Safety For those looking to get out on the ice, thickness varies between 8 and 14 inches depending on the area. Recent pressure ridges have made access a bit tricky in certain spots south of the dam, so we recommend following our tracked paths for the safest transportation. Plan Your Winter or Spring Outing As we look toward the 2026 spring season, the gizzard shad stockings are already showing a massive impact on the weight and health of the walleye population. Expect a phenomenal pre-spawn bite starting in late March! Guide’s Note: "Fishing this time of year is all about patience and hospitality. We keep the boat or the shanty warm, the snacks ready, and the focus on a relaxing, fun environment for every skill level." — William Schied
